A symbolic resolution that would acknowledge the persecution and murders of Connecticut residents — mostly women — tried as witches during the Colonial era, has resulted in some minority Republicans doubling down on their skepticism and opposition to the legislation. One member of the law-writing legislative Judiciary Committee stressed that there still needs to be evidence of their innocence, while another, the top minority member of the panel, said the legislation is better left to Great Britain, because Connecticut did not become a state until after the American Revolution, more than 100 years after the prosecution and execution of 11 people, including two men.
